Peak Roof Cleaning specializes in safely removing algae from asphalt shingles using low pressure washing techniques. We also offer various products that will prevent the algae from returning. Our services are available to the entire South Central Pennsylvania area.

What are the black streaks on my roof?
The dark streaks on your roof are caused by a hardy, blue-green algae called Gloeocapsa magma. This algae typically grows on the north and east sides of roofs. The algae will continue to grow and darken until it is removed. We can safely remove this algae without causing harm and damage to your roof, plants or grass.
How do I keep my roof clean?
We offer two different ways to keep your roof algae free:
- Within one year of having your roof cleaned, we can apply a sealer. This sealer is a great way to keep the unsightly growth from returning, but must be applied annually. If the sealer is applied annually, we guarantee your roof will stay algae free.
- We can install a specialized metal strip along the top of the roof that will prevent the algae from returning. These strips may not work for every roof style or if certain conditions exist. This product can last the remaining life of your roof.
Additional Information
- It does not pay to wait. This algae is constantly growing and spreading. Right now, only one area of your roof could be affected. If you wait, the algae can spread to your entire roof, costing you twice as much to have your roof cleaned. In addition, the black pigment absorbs the heat from the sun, causing premature shingle deterioration and higher temperatures in the attic, which could cost you more to keep your house cool in the summer.
As the algae grows, it penetrates deeper into the shingles, which can cause permanent staining. Even if you have minor stains, have them removed before they darken. (Click picture to enlarge) Once you have these minor streaks, the roof has lost its ability to fight off the algae and it will rapidly spread to cover the entire roof.- We do not use high pressure washing to clean your roof. This method can loosen and remove the granules in the shingles, significantly shortening the life of your roof.
- The detergents we use to clean your roof do not contain bleach, which can be harmful to your roof and vegetation.
- We also clean gutters, siding, decks, fences and sidewalks.
